Abstract
Openwifi project (https://github.com/open-sdr), as the 1st Linux compatible soft-mac Wi-Fi chip/FPGA design, was published on github at the end of 2019. The actual internal development can be traced back to 2017 in the EU H2020 ORCA project (www.orca-project.eu). In this talk we’d like to share the experiences and thoughts gained in the last 7 years and open the discussion of moving forward. The main contents are: What is a Wi-Fi chip and its design/manufacture flow; What are the complexities of a modern Wi-Fi chip; Why an open-source Wi-Fi chip is wanted; Status of the openwifi project; How to make a real open-source Wi-fi chip: what is still missing?
