Abstract

Chip design plays a crucial and precious role in the microelectronics value chain. In order to further expand Germany’s participation in this important technological domain, the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) has launched the Microelectronics Design Initiative in 2022. The initiative’s goal is to significantly extend and enhance the proficiency and experience in chip design among local professionals and companies. With a broad ability to design and produce own microchips, German enterprises, including SME, Start-ups, and university Spin-offs, will gain substantial innovative and competitive potential and contribute significantly to improving Europe’s technological sovereignty. The German Microelectronics Design Initiative focuses on several areas of action: the federal network 'Chipdesign Germany', the open-source design platform of the Leibniz IHP, the funding programs 'DE:Sign' and 'DE:Sign Challenge', the study of the open-source chip design ecosystem in Germany, and the international research collaboration with Taiwan. This talk will provide an overview about recent progress within the German Microelectronics Design Initiative.
