Abstract

In the long run, only the combination of free silicon, open hardware and free and open source software can ensure that we will be able to trust our devices with our most personal data. And only if we can freely study and modify them, we can learn from the technologies that are inside of them. I think it should be our fundamental right to do so. Computers are a critical tool for access to information and communication, and for creativity and expression. We cannot allow that only corporations with deep pockets can control them. Instead, we should push for free and open source designs on all levels, from software down to the silicon.
