==Abstract==
Kactus2 is an open-source tool for designing system-on-chips (SoCs) using the IEEE 1685-2014 and 1685-2022 “IP-XACT” standard. IP-XACT provides a vendor-independent method for describing SoC architectures and reusable IP blocks, supporting the structural representation of complex systems. The benefit of this approach lies in reduced integration effort through standardized IP metadata, which enables automatic generation of structural RTL, address maps, and register descriptions, improving the efficiency of both hardware and software development. Kactus2 implements command line and graphical user interfaces that automate the creation of IP-XACT definitions from HDL files and support the integration of IP-XACT components into a complete SoC structure, while abstracting much of the underlying XML complexity from the user.
