Free Silicon Foundation (I) ETS

The Free Silicon Foundation (I) ETS is an Italian association which supports the free software movement in the context of silicon integrated circuits. On April 2022 the association acquired legal personality ("associazione riconosciuta") in the sense of law decree n.117 of July 3 2017 known as "Codice del Terzo Settore" (ETS). It's purpose is to promote Free and Open Source (FOS) CAD tools for designing integrated circuits, the sharing of hardware designs, the use of common standards, and the freedom of users in the context of silicon technology.

The Free Silicon Foundation (I) ETS welcomes different approaches, paradigms and communities; it promotes the alignment and merging of development efforts, and encourages the cooperation of teams. It further encourages, when appropriate, the distribution of hardware designs under a copyleft licence. As defined in its statute, the Foundation enforces strong financial policies to avoid conflict of interests with third parties.

Involvement in EU projects

Since September 2022 the Free Silicon Foundation (I) ETS is involved in the Go IT! Coordination and Support Action (CSA) funded by the European Union.

Activities

As part of the "Go IT!" project, the Free Silicon Foundation (I) ETS co-organized the Free Silicon Conference in 2023 and 2024, wrote a roadmap for the European Commission and delivered talks in several universities across Europe.
