Abstract
The open-source PDK is a key breakthrough that ensures a closed-loop open-source silicon ecosystem. It is a crucial bridge between the design community and the fabrication sector. Since Skywater’s pioneering effort, progress in expanding open-source PDK adoption among foundries has been slow. So far, only iHP, a semi-commercial manufacturer, has followed suit. Over the past two to three years, I have actively engaged with nearly all foundries in Japan, advocating for their support in developing open-source PDKs. Based on these discussions, this presentation will explore the 5W1H perspective from the foundry side, offering insights into their viewpoint—what could be considered the “dark side of the moon” in this evolving ecosystem.
